There is nothing more person-centered than having the opportunity to map out your own future and be in control of your own life. While the move to self-direction can seem overwhelming, there are many resources out there to help with the process. In the Driver’s Seat believes that Self-Directed Services offer people with developmental disabilities and their families the opportunity to map out their future and be in control of their own lives. They provide tools and resources for individuals and families to effectively navigate and utilize self-directed services to put them in the Driver’s Seat.
Created by two mothers of children with developmental disabilities, In the Driver’s Seat offers the tools and resources that are distilled from years of collaborating with self-advocates, families and professionals to find solutions and create opportunities that wouldn’t otherwise exist.
This sections lists some of In the Driver’s Seat’s great resources that are available for families and individuals. This list is not exhaustive – be sure to check out their website for more information.
Registry: This invaluable resource was created as a place to make connections. It is most often used for people to find roommates to live in the community. However, it can be used to find other people with similar interests to do activities in the community and more.
Success Stories: Switching to self-direction can be a long, trying process. These success stories highlight what a happy, successful, self-directed life can look like.
Broker Directory: Support Brokers help assist individuals through the self-direction process, specifically with the self-directed budget. This directory lists broker and offers an easy way to make contact with them.
Fiscal Intermediary Directory: Fiscal Intermediary (FI) must be available to assist individuals in exercising budget authority. This directory offers an easy stop for individuals to find an FI to assist with fiscal management throughout the Finger Lakes region in New York State.
Support Connections: This is an opportunity for those seeking work to post their interests and a little about themselves and for those seeking support to make a great connection. It will help match potentially employees with individuals who are seeking staff to provide OPWDD funded services such as respite or community habilitation. This resource will be live by the end of 2017!
Starting in November 2017, the Facebook Chat Series, “Dispatches for the Road Ahead” will be held twice per month.
In the Driver’s Seat will be hosting 4 quarterly workshops beginning in the Spring of 2018 for individuals and their families that are interested in self-direction
