Today members of the MediSked team attended the Care Coordination Regional Conference right here in Rochester, New York, where our headquarters is located. New York State is starting a new initiative, known as People First Care Coordination. Care Coordination Organization (CCO), authorized as Health Homes (HH), will provide integrated care coordination for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). Kerry Delaney, Acting Commissioner of the New York State Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) noted that this move to CCO/HH will require significant investment in technology as tracking data, outcomes, and quality becomes more and more important. During her remarks, Commissioner Delaney said, “technology is the cornerstone of modern living.” Her quote really resonated with me as there is push in every industry to incorporate technology to make our lives easier and more efficient.
America’s children are using technology in their classroom to enhance learning, we can order, eat, and pay for a meal in an airport without ever speaking to an employee, you can change your thermostat or see who is ringing your doorbell from another state. For better or for worse, technology is integrated into so much of the world and its presence is only going to continue.
For the I/DD community, carving out investments for technology is essential to support individuals. The best way to prepare for changes like the move to managed care or compliance with your state’s transition plans is to implement health information technology like an electronic health record or care coordination platform. Additionally, as states move towards the value-based payment (VBP) model, where payments are focused more on outcomes than on just if services are delivered. In the VBP model, providers will need to have the ability to deliver evidence for improved outcomes and quality by tracking this data.
Utilizing these electronic solutions also helps agencies to be more person-centered. Including the individuals receiving support and their circle of supports is key to being truly person-centered. Solutions like MediSked Portal – Person-Centered Portal allow individuals visibility into their lives and more control over their supports, services, and staff. Technology is vital in our field and finding software solutions that works for your agency is a must.
The future is data. The future is outcomes. The future is quality.
