COVID-19 Provider Series: New York

This is the third installment in our series of blogs highlighting the work of our providers as they tackle the challenges presented by COVID-19.

New York

The Arc of Livingston-Wyoming in Upstate NY shared some interesting and unique ways they are connecting with individuals and families.

  • Making Connections: Allowing for open lines of communication so that families and staff can share ideas that can then be put into action by agencies. Jeff Thomas, Public Relations Director, has been able to activate the innovative ideas of his network to reduce isolation and loneliness by virtually connecting individuals they support to the community.
  • Online dance challenge: The Arc of Livingston-Wyoming’s Board President, Marcy VanZandt, created a dance challenge to encourage people to post videos of themselves dancing. This is meant to get people up and moving in their homes while also reducing loneliness and connecting them to the community. #arcdancechallenge
  • Virtual pet therapy: A virtual meeting with Dr. Nico, The Arc of Livingston-Wyoming’s resident “dog-tor.” The brainchild of a staff member, the goal was to encourage people to gather around their technology and bring their stuffed animals to hear advice on how to stay safe and healthy and maintain a good attitude.

“It’s our little way of doing what we can to bring people closer together when they might otherwise feel pretty isolated.”

-Jeff Thomas
